Andrew Martin

Director

A qualified Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Town Planner and Urban Designer with almost 50 years experience in both the public (14 years) – Hillingdon LBC and Basildon New Town Development Corporation and private sectors (35 years). Andrew founded Andrew Martin Associates (AMA) in 1983 and was Managing Director following the acquisition of AMA by Capita Symonds Limited (CSL) in June 2009. In May 2012 he left this post to form Andrew Martin-Planning.

Andrew is personally involved in all aspects of work undertaken by the new practice, particularly in relation to producing evidence to major inquiries and tribunals, strategic promotion/major schemes, master planning, the development plan process and project management. He also has considerable experience in successfully finding solutions to the enhancement, re-use and extension of listed buildings, including the award winning Croxton’s Mill (AMA’s former HQ) and Town Mill, Stebbing, Essex.  Andrew has gained an outstanding track record in securing allocations and planning permissions for a wide variety of projects, especially the creation of new neighbourhoods and communities.

Kate Sutton

Director

A Chartered Town Planner, Kate has over 24 years’ experience in the private sector, having joined Andrew Martin Associates (AMA) in 2000 as a Town Planner. Following AMA’s acquisition by Capita Symonds in 2009, Kate spent a further 5 years with the company as Principal Planner.

Kate has experience in a wide range of planning work including the preparation of development appraisals, planning applications for residential, commercial, retail and education uses, planning appeals including enforcement appeals and appearing as expert witness, as well as the promotion of sites through the local plan process. Kate has significant experience in the development control process, overseeing residential and commercial schemes through the application process, including co-ordinating external consultant input and public consultation events.

Kate joined Andrew Martin – Planning (AM-P) in 2016 as a Consultant and became a Director in April 2024.

Ian Butcher

Associate Director

A Chartered Town Planner, Ian has over 20 years experience working on projects for a range of clients from both the private and public sectors. He has significant experience in site/land promotion and the plan making process having successfully led the delivery of a number of Development Plan Documents. Ian has also worked on the delivery of a range of complex planning applications. The nature of this work means Ian has proactively negotiated with a range of stakeholders including national agencies and regional and local government to overcome complex planning issues. He also has an excellent understanding of the evidence used to support site/land allocations and planning applications which include Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessments, Housing Needs Assessments, Green Belt Reviews and Sustainability Appraisals.

Ian Joined AM-P in February 2018 and became an Associate Director in February 2020.

Catherine Hewitt

Principal Urban Designer/Planner

A Chartered Town Planner and Urban Designer, Catherine has over 15 years’ experience working on a wide variety of projects for both public and private sector clients. Catherine spent over four years with AMA/Capita Symonds in the Design Studio where she prepared a variety of planning documents and drawings, including Development Briefs, Design and Access Statements, Promotional Brochures, Indicative Layouts and Masterplans, as well as co-ordinating and attending a number of public consultation events.

Since joining Andrew Martin-Planning (AM-P) in 2013, Catherine has achieved a Masters in Urban Design and has developed her expertise in master-planning for site promotion and outline planning purposes, having been involved with a number of residential and commercial schemes.

As both Town Planner and Urban Designer, Catherine has broad experience of the planning and design process and is proficient in preparing a variety of reports and drawings to support planning applications for residential and commercial uses. Catherine’s experience also includes preparing planning and enforcement appeals; heritage and listed building applications and master-planning for site promotion through the Local Plan process.

Catherine holds the position of Principal Urban Designer/Planner.

Viviane Holznagel

Graduate Town Planner - Apprentice

Viviane joined Andrew Martin – Planning in August 2023 as a Graduate Planner. Viviane graduated from the University of Bayreuth with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Geography (with a focus on Town Planning, Geoinformation Systems and Research Methodologies).

Viviane is studying for an MSc Town Planning (RTPI accredited) at Anglia Ruskin University via the degree apprenticeship scheme.

Jill Griffiths

Office Manager

Jill joined AM-P in 2014, has a broad range of operational experience and is responsible for day to day Office Management including Accounts, Health & Safety, Quality Processes, HR, Marketing,  Liaison, IT and Web Design/Maintenance.

Jill has previously worked for various Chartered Surveyors in senior office management/PA roles including DTZ, Kemsley Whiteley & Ferris and Hilbery Chaplin.  Jill also has previous marketing, social media and web design experience.
